Tips for Using Essential Oils Effectively and Safely

Aromatherapy can offer some amazing benefits, but only when approached rightly. Internet and social media platforms have given everyone a scope to share information — but, regrettably, the majority of people are not aromatherapy experts. And this means they may have advice or suggestions that are absolutely dangerous.

You should always follow recommendations from practitioners who are certified aromatherapists or have formal training in aromatherapy. Don’t always trust in the advice you see floating around out on the web as they can come with severe consequences.

    Avoid internal use of essential oils

There is special training for legitimate usage of essential oil internally, and most aromatherapy sellers are unaware of it. Just because someone has some training under their belt doesn’t necessarily mean he or she has detailed instruction. You are recommended to make sure your professional is an expert before you ingest anything. Find out how and where the person was trained because it is much better to be safe than sorry.

•    Avoid applying undiluted aromatherapy oils to your skin

If you have read any of the authentic recipes for cosmetic products like massage lotions and foot scrubs, you must have seen that there is a mention to always use a carrier oil. That way, you can dilute the organic oils so that they do not irritate your skin. Also, if you are using aromatherapy oils in the bathtub, you can obtain the same effect by combining them with milk¸ sea salts or Epsom salt first. Thus, the oils are not able to float on the surface of the water and cause any kind of irritation to your skin.

•    Essential oils to avoid using in the bath

There are some aromatherapy oils that you should avoid using in the bath. These include basil, black pepper, fennel, cinnamon, oregano, thyme, ginger, marjoram, lemongrass¸ peppermint and orange. In urgent situations, you should use aromatherapy oils like Tea Tree, Lavender, and Chamomile (Roman) undiluted. They are all quite safe for using a single undiluted drop on a burn or cut to help prevent infection.   

•    Don’t apply phototoxic oils to your skin before exposure to the sun

Just because aromatherapy oils are all-natural doesn’t mean that they can’t react with other situations and things. For instance, some essential oils including, grapefruit, cumin, lemon, lime and bergamot can make your skin more sensitive to the sun’s rays. So, don’t use these oils prior to heading off on a beach vacation or just tripping to the tanning bed.
